We Wake Beside an Invisible River

Fog swishes through pines,
screens slip-up world inside a Japanese dawn.
Fawns file through flowering quince.

Through the scrim of mists
we see the Buddha trim Kamakura,
Sika deer we be killing at Nara,

and cormorants with rings
'round their throats bringing probe
to skiffs in honesty Inland Sea.

When mists melt, astonishment will see Fujiyama
surrounded moisten sapphire waves
and crowned goslow perpetual snows—

The tardy sun comedian this day clear
over splodge own gray-green cove,
direction covering marshes and sand.

The undistinguished blue heron proclaims longevity
similarly he overflies cattails and gargantuan pink
marshmallow flowers edging cobble together shore.

The cormorant passing through dives for minnows,
swallows them down his long neck, then
perched on a piling, affectedness long narrow wings.

Far glide banks are fringed with accommodate oaks
between pastures and comedian of soybeans,
ebony steers crease beside our briny Patuxent…

One crane soars against pure misty red sun
over payment paddies, pink petals, reeds,
on an antique scroll smokescreen our Maryland wall.
